Property Auto Liability Claims Intern

Primary Purpose


Supports the Property/Auto/Liability departments by developing technical knowledge of the department; executing job shadows; completing assigned projects in accordance with departmental and company guidelines and standards.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Maintains department files by adjusting reserves; changing follow-up dates; closing and organizing files in accordance with department guidelines and procedures.
  • Issues expense and loss checks.
  • Settles claims by determining insurance carriers liability; reaching agreement with claimant according to policy provisions and authority level.
  • Ensures proper file documentation of assigned files by complying with company and state requirements.
  • Determines insurance coverage by verifying policies and reviewing policy forms. Conducts investigation per department guidelines which may include telephonic interviewing insureds and providers of service; reviewing file documentation; requesting appropriate documentation or records; consulting with experts when appropriate.
  • Processes claims by authorizing payments on repair estimates and replacement invoices.
  • Observes field adjusting of fire, storm and auto damage losses.
  • Attends mediation, motion hearing, deposition and/or trial.
  • Assists with data entry, copying and filing in each department.
  • Prepares various reports by researching, collecting, analyzing, and summarizing research and project data.
  • Participates in a variety of functions in Marketing, Workers Compensation, and Underwriting by observing and/or assisting with claim investigation, department meetings, workers compensation hearings, mediation, agency visits, trade show attendance, etc.

Required:

  • Pursuing Bachelor Degree.
  • 3.0 or better cumulative GPA on a 4 point scale.
  • Full-time junior or senior collegiate status.
  • Basic computer software knowledge (word processing, e-mail, accessing and updating databases).
  • Experience with operating typical office machines (such as a copy machine, fax machine, computer).
  • Valid drivers license and a satisfactory driving record as determined by Society Insurance.

Preferred:

  • Prior office experience.
  • Pursuing Bachelor Degrees in accounting, business, economics, finance or risk management.
