Summary
The National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) is a world leader in accelerating scientific discovery through computation. NERSC provides high-performance computing tools and expertise that enable computational science of scale. Massively parallel scientific computing, data-intensive processing, and visual analytics are key areas for NERSC web applications.
NERSC has developed a web API tailored for the above topics, which is described in detail at NERSC user groups, this position will develop portals and science gateways that bring NERSC resources to the web. These web-based scientific applications are tailored to the needs of specific science groups and their computing and data needs.
Specifically, you will:
- Effectively communicate with science teams in requirements gathering discussions.
- Provide science teams with planning, coding, and deployment of web applications.
- Create new application prototypes, templates and designs; enhance the visual layout of web pages; optimize the organization and flow of information.
- Diagnose and resolve problems in distributed computing environments. Identify and address usability issues in web-based interfaces.
- Assess web application resource usage by examining web and other log data. Follow web security best practices.
- Educate NERSC staff in the use of web technologies; document all procedures used to manage web applications.
In addition to the above responsibilities listed for a Computer Systems Engineer (CSE) 2, the CSE 3 will be expected to independently drive multiple efforts with a greater degree of autonomy and is expected to identify components for reuse between web application projects. This position will further develop the NEWT API and present the API at developers conferences and build interoperability with other emerging HPC APIs, e.g.,
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience and a minimum of four years related experience including two years relevant experience in web application development
- Experience and understanding of both client and server side web applications.
- Experience working with HTML, CSS and AJAX.
- Basic understanding of UNIX environments.
- Ability to think independently, work collaboratively, and contribute to an active intellectual environment.
- Experience with jQuery, PHP, Python or related environments.
- Familiarity with web services technologies and REST
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Desired:
- Experience with agile software development methodologies.
- Experience with large databases
- Experience with scientific portals or gateways
- Experience coordinating multi-person software project teams
- Experience in perfomance analysis and optimization of web realted technologies
In addition to the above qualifications for the CSE 2, the CSE 3 must have a Bachelor?s degree or equivalent experience and a minimum of 12 years related experience. Additionally, the CSE 3 must have previous experience in a lead role, ability to grasp complex problems, independently develop effective solutions, and possess in-depth background in high-performance computing or web application development.

This is a three-year term appointment with the possibility of renewal and with the possibility of conversion to career based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs.
